Water Meter

Do You Know Where Your Water Meter Shut-Off Valve Is?

It’s the middle of the night and a pipe has burst — water is gushing into your home.
Would you know how to shut off the water right now?

  • Your water meter is usually located near the street in a small concrete or plastic box, flush with the ground, often near the sidewalk or curb.
  • Refer to the image for an example of a typical water meter setup with a residential shut-off valve.
  • Remember: Righty-tighty, lefty-loosy!
Turn the valve to the right to shut off the water.
  • Your valve may look different but it will be between the water meter and the residence.
  • Note: City ordinance now requires the installation of a shut-off valve.
If you have an older home and do not see one, we strongly encourage you to have a plumber install it.
